AI-assisted exam grading for higher education
AEMS is an AI grading companion that reads STEM exams, homeworks, and lab reports (handwritten, typed, or printed), applies rubrics consistently, and presents marks for human review. The academic always has final say. AEMS handles the repetition so they can focus on teaching and research.
The opportunity
University exam grading is one of the last major knowledge-work bottlenecks that has not been meaningfully improved by technology. Academics spend 15–30 minutes per paper, multiplied by hundreds of submissions every exam period. The process is manual, repetitive, and scales linearly with student numbers.
Consistency suffers as graders fatigue. Students wait weeks for feedback, by which time they have moved on. Talented academics spend evenings and weekends on marking instead of research or course development. This problem exists at every university, every semester.
Full automation is neither desirable nor trusted in education. Grades carry legal weight and require professional judgment. The right model is a companion: AI that drafts marks against a rubric, with mandatory human review before anything reaches students. This is the approach AEMS takes.
Why AEMS
PDF-native
Works directly with scanned exam papers. No special formats, no transcription steps. Upload a PDF, get an annotated PDF back.
Handwriting recognition
Vision-capable AI models read handwritten, typed, and printed submissions. STEM notation, diagrams, and multi-step reasoning are all supported.
Math-aware extraction (LaTeX)
Equations are extracted as LaTeX, not approximate text. A formula-recognition model runs on math-heavy pages, so integrals, fractions, subscripts, and Greek symbols reach the rubric in the form the student actually wrote.
Canvas LMS integration
Submissions flow in from Canvas, grades and annotated feedback flow back. No file downloads, no uploads, no copy-paste.
Local-first privacy
Run open-source models locally via Ollama for a fully local inference path, or connect a cloud provider. Institutions choose the data-handling model that fits their governance requirements.
Multi-model flexibility
Supports leading cloud providers and local models. No vendor lock-in. Switch providers without changing the workflow.
Compliance moat
GDPR and FERPA compliant. Signed DPAs, tamper-evident audit trails, EU data residency, prompt injection protection. Hard to replicate.
Business model
Three tiers designed for land-and-expand dynamics: a free Personal plan for verified academic instructors drives bottom-up adoption within institutions, departments convert to paid team cloud plans for shared rubrics and analytics, and universities deploy at scale behind their firewalls.
Personal
Free for academic instructors
Hosted app paired with a local agent. Source PDFs stay on the user’s machine; grading orchestration runs through AEMS services. Gated by institutional-email verification.
Department
Per-seat SaaS
Cloud-hosted in EU data centres. Shared rubrics, team calibration, Canvas integration, and managed infrastructure.
Institutional
Volume licensing
On-premises deployment behind the university firewall. The institution controls data residency, access policies, and AI providers.
Where investment would go
AEMS is not currently raising, but we are open to conversations with investors and advisors who understand higher education. When the time is right, investment would be directed toward:
First hires to accelerate product development and expand platform capabilities.
SOC 2, formal bias audits, and additional compliance certifications that universities require.
Pilot programme expansion, conference presence, and partnerships with university networks.
Expand beyond Canvas to Blackboard, Moodle, and Brightspace.
