Common questions

Does the AI replace the examiner’s judgment?
No. AEMS proposes marks and annotations based on your rubric. The academic reviews every grade and can accept, adjust, or override any decision before it reaches students. The AI is an assistant, not a replacement.
Where is student data stored?
That depends on the plan you choose. With Personal, source PDFs stay on your machine via the paired agent while grading orchestration runs through AEMS services. With Department, data is processed and stored in EU data centres. With Institutional, everything runs behind your university’s firewall. See our Security page for full details.
Can it handle handwritten exams?
Yes. AEMS uses vision-capable AI models to read handwritten, typed, and printed submissions. It works with any exam paper you can scan or export as a PDF.
Do I have to configure models myself?
No, not to get started. Personal uses the standard AEMS setup with the local agent. Department and Institutional deployments can be configured more broadly when a university needs that level of control.
Does AEMS work with our LMS?
AEMS integrates directly with Canvas LMS for fetching submissions, syncing grades, and delivering annotated feedback to students. Support for additional LMS platforms is on the roadmap.
Can students manipulate the AI marking?
AEMS includes prompt injection protection that detects invisible or hidden text in PDFs, a technique sometimes used to influence AI models. Suspicious submissions are flagged for manual review.
